Post-Romantic Lives

Romantic love, the legacy of which still torments us all, could not solve the dilemma of the self and the other, any more than Romantic vision could heal the dumbfoundering abyss between the subject and the object. Though these were spiritual failures they tended also to be aesthetic triumphs, for Romantic poetry has the sharp poignance of awakening every reader's own nostalgias for the unending quest after love and beauty that come to us only imperfectly in our post-Romantic lives.
