Elephant

This has got to die
I said this has got to stop
This has got to lie down
With someone else on top

You can keep me pinned
'Cause it's easier to tease
But you can't paint an elephant
Quite as good as she

And she may cry like a baby
And she may drive me crazy

'Cause I am lately lonely

So why'd you have to lie
I take it I'm your crutch
The pillow in your pillowcase
Is easier to touch

And when you think you've sinned
Do you fall upon your knees?
Or do you sit within your picture?
Do you still forget the breeze?

And she may rise if I sing you down
And she may wisely cling to the ground

'Cause I am lately horny
So why would she take me thorny?

What's the point of this song or even singing?
If you've already gone, why am I clinging?

Well I could throw her out
And I could live without
And I could do it all for you
I can be true

Tell me if you want me to lie
'Cause this has got to die
I said this has to stop
This has got to lie down, down
With someone else on top

And you can both keep me pinned
'Cause it's easier to tease
But you can't make me happy, no
Quite as good as me...
Well,
You know that's a lie

Damien Rice, "Elephant"

Was I lying when I said this would be the worst part? Oh no, ladies and gentlemen, how was I to lie!

Don't you understand? Well, this song is "The Blower's Daughter" part two. To be honest, I didn't know "Elephant" was the second part, but some days ago I was carefully listening to this song and realized I knew the breeze part from somewhere else. When I played the other disc (0), I found out the breeze part was also a line in "The Blower's Daughter" so I look it up and yes, these two songs go together.

If you thought our singer was going to forget her just because he said he loathed her and wanted to leave it all behind... You were wrong. Of course he had to say he was doing well. Of course he had to pretend not to care. But the truth is: He was walking through hell.

What I understand is that our singer has a new relationship, but is still thinking of the blower's daughter. Bad, bad, bad, and bad. You know, this thing of looking for pleasure or joy (whatever you choose) in someone else just for the sake of oblivion is terrible (and I know what I'm talking about). And what about comparisons? "But you can't paint an elephant quite as good as she." Well, if this is the best he can say about the new person there's a big problem going on. There may be something else behind this apparently silly comparison (after all it's the title of the song), but it sounds more like "at least she can do something better than you." He admits the reasons why he is with her (in the two chorus parts), but doesn't seem to understand why the new person accepts such a situation. Yeah, that's awful as well.

And then what? Ohhh, the blower's daughter, that is, Miss-sorry-I-don't-love-you appears. ---I think he refers to the new person as "she" and to the blower's daughter as "you", which is quite meaningful, don't you think?--- Well, he knows this woman doesn't love him and is aware of the fact that he cares infinitely more about her than she does about him. Maybe they're still friends. But where was I going to? Oh yes, he's her "crutch." She's there, but, at the same time, is not.

I'm not sure about this:

And when you think you've sinned
Do you fall upon your knees?
Or do you sit within your picture?
Do you still forget the breeze?

This is the part linked to "The Blower's Daughter." In that song both would "forget the breeze," but here it is only she who forgets it. Ohh, I get it (haha). Maybe she's got someone else and feels sorry for our singer, but anyway she ignores him.--??? I don't know :S-- Dahh, of course,he would like her to feel miserable for being with another man, but no, it seems she just forgets the breeze.

"What's the point of this song or even singing? If you've already gone, why am I clinging?" Why do we do these things? I mean, why does he sing this? Why do I write about this? Why do some people make phone calls to say this? Why does this make us suffer so much and we just can't forget completely? Really, I just don't understand.

And here you have it, the poisonous, cutting and hellish part of both songs: Our singer knows she has decided not to be the one for him. Can you feel the anguish in these words?

And I could throw her out
And I could live without
And I could do it all for you
I can be true

Wahhh, he's drowning (I've written about the drowning thing). Yeah, he needs to shout this so she realizes what he feels. Honestly, only reading this hurts, but when you listen is worse... And when you feel it, it kills. See, he's taking all his I'm-fine words from "The Blower's Daughter" back. It's clear; he never meant what he said, it was nothing but an attempt to get over her. This is the full acceptance of the disaster of losing. And you lose because no matter anything, the special one doesn't love you. That's the way it is.

...By the way,do you notice "she" has become an unimportant thing? We could say she's his crutch... Ironical, isn't it?

So, "Tell me if you want me to lie 'Cause this has got to die." What does this mean? I need to know if:

-You want me to tell I don't love you so you can go on.
-You want me to tell I'm doing far better with the new one so as to see if I can hurt you.
-You simply want me to shut up.

Does anybody have a better option?

In the end our singer's words go to both "you" and "she". Why? Is it because "she" is the pleasing toy in charge to ease his mind while "you" is the one who keeps him breathing in spite of the pain? Who knows? One thing is for sure, in this life we can't have it all in one person.

If you are wondering... yes, I wanted to post this before. I didn't know I could relate the songs, but "Elephant" stands on its own. It was complicated because there was no power on Earth to make me say the Mr Tilapia experiment was a mistake. Now that it's over, I say yes, bringing a new person when you feel like I feel is a stupid thing to do (fortunately, I managed this on time). And also, feeling like this for someone who doesn't love you is PATHETIC (capitals required) and painful and horrible because you dont' want to, but you can't help it. Emmm, but as the song goes, "this has got to die" "this has got to stop."

NOTES:

1 I should create a FAQ section on this blog hahaha.
2 Gosh, so now I'm a vampira!! Hey, there's no reason why, but it sounds cute :P
3 I'm writing too much again. Sorry, this post is just too long.
4 Listen to Damien Rice, maybe you'll want to commit suicide later, but his music's worth the pain it causes.
5 This post is becoming even longer.
6 Rafaaa, your essay is making me crazy!! I love your writing (and this includes your poems (sigh)).
7 I don't know how to solve the problem with my notes on facebook. They don't apeat properly. There's no point in sharing the video for each post if by the time that post is shown on my wall, the video is already at the bottom of the page.
8 Greetings to everybody!!
9 Sorry for this intense mood of mine, but this song hits me.
